Meningitis is a condition caused by inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms of meningitis include fever, headache, stiff neck, light sensitivity, and rash. These symptoms can be more difficult to detect in young children. Approximately 10% of those diagnosed with bacterial meningitis in the United States will die from the disease or it’s complications.
The Meningococcal vaccine helps protect against CERTAIN TYPES of bacterial meningitis caused by strains of the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis. The Meningococcal vaccine is recommended for many travel itineraries to the developing world and in certain cases is required for travel.
The Denver Travel Medicine Clinic administers the Meningitis vaccines Menactra ® and Menommune ® .
